Our services.
Rescue.
We rescue all across the island of Nantucket. We humanely trap in all regions of the island. We trap at all hours of the day and night every day of the year. After medical checks and spay/neutering, we help prepare social cats to be placed in homes. We return feral cats to their original locations.
Spay/Neuter.
When one unspayed female cat, her mate and offspring can produce over two million cats in eight years, spay and neutering is essential to the work we do on Nantucket and a core part of our mission. Thus, we make sure every community cat we help gets spayed or neutered.
Provide medical care.
All of the kittens and cats that we rescue have physical exams and receive feline tests and vaccinations. We also help cats who need advanced medical care for issues such as trauma injuries, organ deficiencies, dental work, or malnutrition. Poor Sir Duke (now Cosmo) pictured here needed his leg removed after getting hit by a car and is an example of the medical care we offer Nantucket’s community cats. We also offer long term care for cats with special needs.
Foster.
Many kittens and cats that we rescue need time before they can be placed in homes. They may need neonatal care, socialization activities or monitoring during a medical program. We help provide this important step in many cats lives.
Bring into homes.
Our favorite outcome for any cat we rescue is a loving human home where warm shelter, yummy food, cold water, and lots of love can be offered year round. We help kittens develop the necessary socialization to thrive in a human home. We assess all of our adult cats to see if they have the potential to live inside. We then create a profile for what we think is an ideal home set up for the given kitten or cat. We currently partner with Nantucket Safe Harbor for Animals (NiSHA) on adoptions.
Support post release.
Our work is not done after we trap, neuter, release or help find a home. We also maintain feeders and shelter structures across the island that offer critical food, water and shelter to cats year-round, including in the winter and stormy weather. Cattrap volunteers are out in all kinds of weather being sure these cats are cared for. We also monitor these feeders 365 days a year to identify cats in need of spay/neuter or colony cats in need of medical care. .
Educate.
In addition to providing care directly to the island cats in need, we also feel it is very important to educate people about the needs of community cats. Through social media activity and one-on-one consultations, we help educate the general public about all things cat, including cat behavior, responsible cat care, the importance of spay and neutering, and how to identify a cat in need. It takes a village to give all of our cats a chance.
